Visual Artist, Musician and Emerging Curator, working in ceramic sculpture, interactive digital art, sound and photography.
Lucy Zola is a visual artist and musician from Kaurna Land (Adelaide, South Australia). After completing a Bachelor of Contemporary Art at the University of South Australia in 2021, Lucy has spent the past year and a half abroad on a scholarship, engaging in internships, studies, and residencies across South Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Hong Kong, and Mongolia.
Zola’s multidisciplinary works feature the recurring symbol of windows, through which she explores the complex tensions and dichotomies in her life. Themes in their work include a deep fear and fascination with darkness, the experience of feeling profoundly alone while surrounded by people, the paradoxical pain and pleasure of solitude, and the dual nature of home as both a prison and a sanctuary. Zola brings these themes to life through interactive digital graphic notations, experimental films, photographs, and sculptures, all accompanied by soundscapes and musical compositions that align with the visual elements.
Lucy Zola is also an emerging curator and undertook a mentorship with The Helpmann Academy as Project Curator of their Graduate Exhibition in 2022. Zola has also curated & organised other exhibitions and shows including: ‘Accent’ visual art and music exhibition at Urban Cow Studio (2021) and ‘Evoke’ an Adelaide Fringe art and music performance and exhibition at Holly Rollers Studio (2018).
Zola has received many awards for their studies in both visual arts and music. These include: ‘The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade New Colombo Plan Scholarship’ to undertake study, artist residencies and internships in the Indo-Pacific Region, ‘Friends of the Australian School of Art Prize (2019)’, the ‘Valda and Max Mycko Grant for Visual Arts (2019)’, Chancellor’s Letters of Commendation (2017, 2018, 2019 & 2020) and the Australian and New Zealand Cultural Arts Prize for Music Performance Excellence (2017).’ Zola has previously exhibited their works in group exhibitions ‘Accent’ (2021), a month long exhibition at Urban Cow Studio and ‘A quarter turn around the sun’ (2020) at the SASA gallery as part of the SALA festival.
